VIDEO: Oct. 17 Spirit at Sarnia
The Saginaw Spirit ventured to Sarnia to take on the Sting for a game at the RBC Centre for the final game of their road trip. Sarnia managed to come out on top with a 6-3 victory over Saginaw.
The Saginaw Spirit and the Sarnia Sting skated to a scoreless first period thanks to some stifling goaltending. Saginaw's Jake Paterson stopped all nine Sting shots he faced, and Sarnia's Taylor Dupuis shut down all nine Spirit shots that were sent his way.
Sarnia wasted little time getting on the board 58 seconds into the second period with a goal scored by Russian born forward Nikita Korostelev, his first in the OHL, assisted by Anthony DeAngelo. However, Saginaw struck back with a powerplay goal 58 seconds later off the stick of Kristoff Kontos that was assisted by Eric Locke to tie the game at one. Three minutes into the period, Zach Bratina fired home his third goal of the young season with assists from Jeremiah Addison and Sean Callaghan. Saginaw's Mitchell Stephens, with his first ever OHL goal, joined the scoring party six minutes into the period with assists via Nick Moutrey and Jake Paterson, to give the Spirit a 3-1 lead. With 11 minutes to play in the second period, Sarnia's Anthony DeAngelo netted a goal that was assisted by Bryan Moore and Vladislav Kodola to draw the Sting within one goal of the Spirit. A powerplay goal scored by the Sting's Nikolay Goldobin that was assisted by Anthony DeAngelo tied the game at three with five minutes to play in the period. The seventh goal of the period was fired home with less than two minutes to play by Nikita Korostelev for his second of the night that was assisted by Nikolay Goldobin and Anthony DeAngelo, giving Sarnia a 4-3 lead over Saginaw.
The Sting's forward Patrick White scored 6 minutes into the third period making it a 5-3 game in favor of Sarnia, and an assist was credited to Noah Bushnell on White's goal. Forty seconds later Sarnia added a sixth goal courtesy of Nikolay Goldobin, his second of the night, with an assist from Nickolas Latta. A 6-3 score was how the game ended as Saginaw was beaten by Sarnia.
