Spirit Counter Attack in 5-3 Win

(Saginaw, MI) The Saginaw Spirit beat the Owen Sound Attack 5-3 Saturday night at TheDow Event Center in Saginaw. Both Patrick Asselin and Jack Combs tallied 3 points in the effort. The Spirit have 5 points and a record of 2-1-1-0.

“I felt it was a full team effort, the guys really stepped up and it was a good team win” said Goalie Ryan Daniels.
Owens Sound took an early 1-0 lead at the 10:02 mark in the first when center Marc Franchini tallied a goal off an assist from right winger Wayne Simmonds (LA) and defenseman Michael D’Orazio. Saginaw’s Patrick Asselin answered with a power play goal at 12:21, moving his consecutive goal record to three games. Spirit winger Jack Combs finished out the first period with a power play goal at the 14:44 mark, assisted by Asselin and defenseman Nigel Williams (COL). The period ended 2-1 Saginaw; it is the first time this season the Spirit have ended the first period with a lead.
The Spirit continued to lead the game throughout the second period. Winger Jan Mursak (DET) scored at the 11:42 mark, assisted by center Ryan McDonough and Williams. The Spirit scored again at the 13:10 mark with a second tally from Asselin. Winger Tomas Zaborsky (NYR) and Combs took the assists.
The Attack bounced back with two goals in the third period, one :40 seconds into the third by Simmonds, assisted by forward Scott Tregunna and defenseman Milan Doczy. The third and final Owen Sound goal of the evening came at 11:16 from winger Matt Carter with assists from winger Joshua Domingues and Franchini. The Spirit sealed the game 5-3 with a goal at the 13:15 mark from McDonough, assisted by defenseman Nick Crawford and Mursak.
Spirit netminder Ryan Daniels (OTT) tallied 31 saves in the effort while Attack goalie David Davenport notched 36 saves.

The Spirit go on the road next week with a game against Windsor on Thursday, Belleville on Saturday and Niagara on Sunday. The team also plays against the Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds on Friday, October 12th. The Spirit return to action at TheDow Event Center in Saginaw on Saturday, October 13th against the Barrie Colts. The 7:11 PM game will feature a magnet schedule give-a-way courtesy Four Points by Sheraton and Muehlenbeck Distributing. The game will also feature Mascot Olympics and performances from the Saginaw Spirit Dance Team and Junior Dance Team.
