Spirit Win 2013-2014 Home Regular Season Opener with a Strong Performance from Paterson

The Saginaw Spirit hosted the Erie Otters for their regular season home opener Wednesday September 25th.  The game came to a close with the Spirit coming out on top 2-1 over the Otters.

The Spirit started fast with a goal scored by Cody Payne, his fifth of the year, assisted by Justin Kea and Nick Moutrey one minute into the game. Saginaw peppered Erie goaltender Oscar Dansk with 17 shots throughout the period.  Spirit goalie Jake Paterson was unsurpassable while stopping 10 first period Otter shots.  Period one came to a close with the Spirit leading the Otters 1-0.

Once again Saginaw began the period with a fast pace leading to a Kristoff Kontos goal, his first of the new season, two minutes into the period, assisted by Brandon Prophet giving Saginaw a 2-0 lead over Erie. Both teams settled in trading scoring chances, but the score remained 2-0 after the second period. Jake Paterson pitched another shut out period in goal for the Spirit.  However, Erie managed to take an edge in shots on goal after two mustering up 27 to Saginaw’s 25.

After a Spirit penalty four minutes into the third period, the Otters capitalized with a powerplay goal from Michael Curtis assisted by Adam Pelech and Dane Fox to cut the Spirit’s lead to one, 2-1.  Saginaw’s Paterson faced a lot of third period pressure applied by Erie but stood strong keeping the game at a 2-1 score leading to a Saginaw Spirit victory.  Saginaw managed 31 shots in the game, while Erie accounted for 44 shots on goal.
