Toronto, ON – The Ontario Hockey League today announced that Saginaw Spirit forward Garret Ross is the OHL Player of the Week for the week ending January 13 after recording seven points in three games including three goals and four assists with a plus-minus rating of plus-2.
Ross paced the Spirit offense last week leading the club to three straight home wins to extend their winning streak to a season-high five straight victories. After picking up an assist in a 6-5 win over West Division rivals the Plymouth Whalers on Wednesday night, Ross tallied two straight three-point games. On Friday night he claimed first star honours scoring once and adding two assists including one on Eric Locke’s game-winner as part of a 4-3 win over the Erie Otters. The Spirit pulled off perhaps their biggest win of the season on Saturday defeating the London Knights by a 5-2 score delivering the OHL’s top team their first regulation loss since November 1 in a span of 28-games. Ross earned second star honours with two goals and one assist in the contest.
Ross, a 20-year-old from Dearborn Heights, Michigan, is playing in his fourth OHL season with the Spirit. The newly appointed team captain, Ross was selected by the Chicago Blackhawks in the fifth round of the 2012 NHL Entry Draft and is currently second in team scoring with 49 points in 38 games including 24 goals and 25 assists.
Also considered for the award this week was Nick Cousins of the Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds and Connor Brown of the Erie Otters. Both players picked up seven points in three games with Cousins recording seven assists, and Brown producing four goals and three assists. In goal, the Greyhounds’ Matt Murray went 3-0-0-0 with a goals-against-average of 1.33 and save percentage of .954.
