Spirit Fall to Rivals on the RoadDec 27, 2012 - 11:33 EST
The Saginaw Spirit took on the Plymouth Whalers on Thursday afternoon falling on the road, 4 – 2.
Both Western Conference rivals came out strong in the opening period, however, the Spirit were able to advance first with a short-handed goal from Eric Locke, his 20th of the season, assisted by Buffalo Sabres prospect, Justin Kea. The first period ended Saginaw 1 – Plymouth 0.
The second period opened up with a Whaler goal by Matthew Mistele, his 14th of the season, with assists coming from Cody Payne and Tom Wilson. The Spirit fired back with a power play goal from Chicago Blackhawks prospect, Garret Ross, his 17th of the season, assisted by Eric Locke and Nathan Glass. The Whalers scored two more goals in the period, first by Alex Aleardi, his 14th of the season, with assists coming from Danny Vanderwiel and Mitch Jones, followed by a power play goal from Tom Wilson, his 8th of the season, assisted by Alex Aleardi and Gianluca Curcuruto. The period ended Plymouth 3 – Saginaw 2.
After a great goaltending duel in the third, the Whalers scored the final goal of the game with just three minutes left by Connor Carrick, his 5th of the season, which was unassisted. The score at the end of 60 minutes was Plymouth 4 – Saginaw 2, with shots on goal Saginaw 49 – Plymouth 35.
